Of the many businesses who venture into search engine optimization, only a handful begin the process with realistic expectations which is largely due to a misunderstanding of what SEO is and what SEO is not. Having a good understanding of what SEO can and can not do for your website is a big part of whether or not your campaign will be successful.

Search engine optimization does several things for your website but is designed solely to drive traffic to your website. Essentially you'll want to think of SEO much the same as you would producing and running a commercial on television. The purpose of both is to expose as many people as possible to your products and/or services. Without advertisements a business can only grow so much and survive for a short amount of time. What makes optimizing your website different from running an ad on television however is the fact that the internet is open and accessible to people all over the world.

This means virtually anyone can find and view your website through a simple search. A website without any or very little search engine optimization however may not be found or at least found in a prominent position in search results. This means while you may have local visitors or people who know of your site through business dealings, most people won't even know it exists. You can not expect to find success in an online marketing campaign by starting and stopping, stopping after you reach a specific goal, or dramatically fluctuate your SEO budget. Once more Search Engine Optimization is not a miracle cure for a struggling business nor is it the last thing you'll need to do in order to take your business/website to the next level. Those who have their websites optimized and then stop the campaign after what they feel are disappointing results inside of 3 to 6 months are foolish. You can expect great things from SEO however the process and results take a fair amount of time.
