What Search Engine Optimization Is And Is Not: "Realistic Expectations"

Of the many businesses who venture into search engine optimization, only a handful begin the process with realistic expectations which is largely due to a misunderstanding of what SEO is and what SEO is not. Having a good understanding of what SEO can and can not do for your website is a big part of whether or not your campaign will be successful.

Realistic Expectations: What Search Engine Optimization Can Do For Your Website/Business

Search engine optimization does several things for your website but is designed solely to drive traffic to your website. Essentially you'll want to think of SEO much the same as you would producing and running a commercial on television. The purpose of both is to expose as many people as possible to your products and/or services. Without advertisements a business can only grow so much and survive for a short amount of time. What makes optimizing your website different from running an ad on television however is the fact that the internet is open and accessible to people all over the world.

This means virtually anyone can find and view your website through a simple search. A website without any or very little search engine optimization however may not be found or at least found in a prominent position in search results. This means while you may have local visitors or people who know of your site through business dealings, most people won't even know it exists. Websites that have been properly optimized however will garner the most attention from search engines and in turn will be placed much higher in search results.

Now in terms of what to realistically expect from online marketing, you'll want to keep in mind that there are several things that factor into how successful your online marketing campaign is. These are as follows:

Marketing Company - Not every SEO firm operates the same way. Some are White Hat, some are Black Hat and some fall into the grey area in between the two "Hats" of SEO. The majority of these firms fall into the White Hat category but they all incorporate different methods and utilize different tools when optimizing a website. Companies will also vary greatly in the keywords and phrases they choose which determines who finds you and for what terms. There are many online marketing firms that choose keywords which have little to no competition online. At Next Revolution SEO we determine what keywords are search for most and that are related to your products/services. When you hire us for search engine optimization you'll be competition with what we call the "big dogs". We optimize your site so that it not only gets attention from search engines but is competitive with your online competition.

Time - SEO is not process that works overnight, in a few weeks or even a couple of month. Any company that tells you to expect fantastic results in a relatively short period of time is being dishonest with you. While it's true that you'll see some significant boosts to the number of visitors you receive after just a few months, the biggest results, i.e. first page results and placement usually does not occur for 6 to 9 months. Additionally the longer your website remains optimized and online the better your results will be. Those who start a campaign and then quit will find that the work done and money spent on their website will be all for not. SEO requires patience and consistency and a whole lot of time above all else.

Consistency - If you're planning on having your website optimized on a semi-regular or irregular basis and expecting good results, you'll be sorely disappointed not long after you begin the campaign. Successful search engine optimization campaigns are those that see business owners practice patience and consistency. You can not expect to find success in an online marketing campaign by starting and stopping, stopping after you reach a specific goal, or dramatically fluctuate your SEO budget. SEO  requires a long term commitment both on the part of the individual investing in the campaign and by the firm running it.

Realistic Expectations: What Search Engine Optimization Does Not Do For Your Website/Business

Once more Search Engine Optimization is not a miracle cure for a struggling business nor is it the last thing you'll need to do in order to take your business/website to the next level. Those who have their websites optimized and then stop the campaign after what they feel are disappointing results inside of 3 to 6 months are foolish. You can expect great things from SEO however the process and results take a fair amount of time.
